Gradually Truncated Power Law distribution - citation of scientists

چکیده
The number of times, a scientist is cited in other scientific publications is now an important factor in his merit consideration. Normally citation indices of highly cited scientists are available, which in turn give information only about the dynamics of the citation mechanism of this group. In the present work, we studied the statistical distribution of the citation index of Brazilian scientists working in diverse areas, through Zipf-plot technique. As it is a small sub-group within the scientific community, it can better explain the dynamics of citation index. We find that gradually truncated power law distribution can explain well citation index. The distribution of citation of most cited physicist can also be well explained We develop a model of citation, based on positive feedback, i.e. highly cited scientist, would get better financial help, and more students, which in turn help to form a large group working in the same topic and paper is cited more times. The limiting factor comes because of limited number of articles which can be published in a particular sub-area due to limited number of scientific journal, where the article can be cited.

Gradually Truncated Log-normal distribution - Size distribution of firms
Many natural and economical phenomena are described through power law or log-normal distributions. In these cases, probability decreases very slowly with step size compared to normal distribution. Thus it is essential to cut-off these distributions for larger step size. Recently we introduce the gradually truncated power law distribution to successfully describe variation of financial, educatio...
متن کاملCitation Distribution of Individual Scientist: Approximations of Stretch Exponential Distribution with Power Law Tails
A multi-parametric family of stretch exponential distributions with various power law tails is introduced and is shown to describe adequately the empirical distributions of scientific citation of individual authors. The fourparametric families are characterized by a normalization coefficient in the exponential part, the power exponent in the power-law asymptotic part, and the coefficient for th...
متن کاملLearning and the structure of citation networks ∗
The distribution of citations received by scientific publications can be approximated by a power law, a finding that has been explained by “cumulative advantage”. This paper argues that socially embedded learning is a plausible mechanism behind this cumulative advantage. A model assuming that scientists face a time trade-off between learning and writing papers, that they learn the papers known ...
متن کاملFree Vibration Analysis of Continuously Graded Fiber Reinforced Truncated Conical Shell Via Third-Order Shear Deformation Theory
This paper deals with free vibration analysis of continuously graded fiber reinforced (CGFR) truncated conical shell based on third-order shear deformation theory (TSDT), by developing special power-law distributions. The orthotropic (CGFR) truncated conical shell are clamped and simply supported at the both ends. It is assumed to have a smooth variation of fibers volume fraction in the thickne...
متن کاملBuckling Behaviors of Symmetric and Antisymmetric Functionally Graded Beams
The present study investigates buckling characteristics of both nonlinear symmetric power and sigmoid functionally graded (FG) beams. The volume fractions of metal and ceramic are assumed to be distributed through a beam thickness by the sigmoid-law distribution (S-FGM), and the symmetric power function (SP-FGM). These functions have smooth variation of properties across the boundary rather tha...
